Taking WIKIs to the classroom
Students in English 206 at the University of Delaware began this wiki in the fall of 2007 as a kind of online handbook to complement the work they were doing in class. Working in collaborative teams, students chose a writer, a specific work, or the cultural contexts of a literary period, and did some research. The students presented their findings in a way that would be useful to other students and took advantage of the multimedia possibilities of the wiki.
Their goal is to build a wiki of British Literature from 1660 to the Present. In our new new media class we are blogging about our findings and sharing them on our facebook page. There seems to be a move to not have class online but share class online. Take what you would be writing in class and put it out there for others to read. This is a great idea. I think it will make people better writers knowing that not just their professor will be reading their work. Also if something is good enough it my get discovered and be a stepping stone for that writer.

Problems of media engagement
Problems of media engagement
In chapter 4 of Jenkins, Jenkins talks about the problems of illegal media online. There is a growing problem of movies and tv shows being available online illegally. Jenkins raises the idea that its bad but at the same time it can be a good thing. The idea that if the people producing the media can get advertisements in the product that is going online illegally than there is a way to still make money.
This raises the idea of product placement in the media. For a while product placements in media like this had died out because people were getting tired of it, but because it is hard to have commercials and advertisements on these illegal sites then the producers are thinking product placement is the way to go.
Also another idea that Jenkins brings up is that it is hard to measure what is being viewed because of the illegal sites. The thing is there are sites like YouTube and other sites that can give a count to the exact number of times it has been views. Television cannot do that. Their numbers come from random sampling.
In other words there seems to be a problem measuring what is being viewed out there as well as that there are problems finding the right way to advertise to the new new media audience.

Dynamite media
The Today Show did a piece on how that there are more and more people doing their own version of popular hits. They got together with Mike Tompkins to do their own rendition of Dynamite by Taio Cruz.
Tompkins video has over 6 million views while the Today Show only has 50 thousand. The numbers do not really matter but the idea that news stations are realizing that there are movements out there on youtube and new new media that people are interested in.
Yes Tompkins does all of his sound effects on his videos witch makes him unique in that sense but it seems that more and more people are trying to recreate that. It seems that new new media has people that try and just mimic what they see out there. It seems that there is a wave of people just copying what they see instead of being new.
Does this mean that new new media is leveling out? Or is this the way new new media will evolve.

Wikihood
Once again as I stumble around the internet I have come across another application for smart phones. It is called Wikihood. Wikihood uses your current location and then tells you what is around you either historically or what ever is on wikipedia in your current location.
Using Wikihood you can get on the spot answers to questions like:
What persons are most relevant to this location?
What rivers, mountains are in the area?
What museums or famous buildings are nearby?
Wikihood's ultimate goal is to organize the world's knowledge - stored
in the Wikipedia - for any location worldwide, accessible to anyone anywhere.
Specially designed for mobile devices,
Wikihood gives you fast access to the data
you need by intelligently showing you
articles according to their
- distance ("What is next to me?")
- relevance ("What are the most prominent sites?")
- popularity ("What do people like most?")
People can help build wikihood as well. You can help rate how accurit the site is as well as add any information about that area as well.

Ethnography Pearl trees
So I have decided on what to do my ethnography project on. I think....
So part of research I do for this class is getting on stumbleupon and enjoy stumbling around the internet and finding hidden treasures. Upon doing so I came across a web site called Pearltrees. This is a collaborative website were you share what you are interested in and others do the same, and from there you share what you find on the Internet. Now I am new to this still but am looking forward to exploring what pearltrees is all about and really diving into what "pearls" and "hidden treasures" (reference to earlier in the post) there are.

Crowdsourcing

This is just one type of crowdsourcing. I think that this is a trend that more and more are starting to follow. I feel that people are seeing the good that new new media is capable of. As more and more become aware I Think there will be more sharing. And not just sharing common knowledge but like Plug share there will be people sharing on the internet on a more personal level and that there will be a trust that is built. If there is not then there will be no furthering this type of new new media.

Where do you get your Facebook updates?
This Ad appeared during the superbowl. This is just pushing home the fact of the idea that people need social media to interact. Instead of a letter or a phone call, the guy in the clip relies on Facebook for his information on how the date went.
To expand on this idea of relationships revolving around facebook and social media is mind boggling. Me personally, I have a hard time understanding that people can form relastionships without personal one on one interaction. But because of social media people can now. For instance, Skype, facebook chat, and other online medias allow people to connect one on one online. cutting out the ideas of going on real live dates and instead going on online skype dates.
All this to say is that things are changing and people have two choices, to go with the changing times or just ignore what is going on and stay in the electronic "stone age".

What is the Internet.
So this is a clip from 1994 just 16 years ago on the Todays show about what the
internet was. We have come along way. They honestly did not know what it was.
Now think about what we are doing and don't understand. I mean we pretty much run on the
internet now. Will we run off tweets and facebook, or will there be something else that right now
we just can not grasp.

Intro
Hello my fellow COM 490 classmates and a shout out to the professor Dr. Wilson.
So here is my introduction. I am 21 and a senior at Reinhardt University. I am a Visual communications electronic media major. I am the Intramural Sports Coordinator. I also work in the Communications edit lab and I work as a campus ministry intern on campus as well.
I am looking forward to this class and what we can learn from it. See all of you in class on Tuesday 18th at 12:30.
Matt Martin signing off.
Readings part one
In the readings from the New New Media book, something that struck me was the idea that there seems to be a dependency on New New Media more than ever before. Just looking back to the week school was canceled the internet was down and people when in a social setting would bring up the fact that they could not check there Facebook or couldn’t communicate with the outside world.
I know New New Media is not just facebook and the Internet and all it has to offer but that is what I see as a major component of it. For example when people said they felt isolated from the outside world of Reinhardt, they meant they could not visit youtube cannels, read tweets, read blogs, or check peoples Facebook statuses. All this to say it seems that with this New New Media that is forming it comes from this new generation that gets to experience all of this first hand. It is what is being feed to them. The older generations are adapting but they still have their “New Media” and “Media” that still has they primitive forms. I use the word primitive lightly in the sense that with New New Media and Web 2.0 primitive is only 15 years ago.
With this New New Media there is the good and the bad. In the text “New New Media” Levinson compares New New Media to guns and pillows. Both can be used for good and bad. It seems to me that people, because they have been given this power to produce what they want in New New Media, abuse the good that comes with New New Media. Levinson takes a whole chapter to talk about things that are normally used for good, but one or two bad apples use things like twitter and craigslist for bad.
All this to say, is that I am looking forward to learning a media that is a constent self-learning media. It is like I am an explorer and I have just discovered this new world of New New Media. Land ho.

Video blogging, sometimes shortened to vlogging[1] (pronounced ‘vlogging’, as opposed to ‘v-logging’[2]) or vidding[3][4][5] or vidblogging[6] is a form of blogging for which the medium is video,[7] and is a form of Internet television. Entries often combine embedded video or a video link with supporting text, images, and other metadata. Entries can be recorded in one take or cut into multiple parts. It is also a very popular category on YouTube.
